Step lights mounted in the wall alongside each tread or integrated into risers provide direct illumination of the walking surface without creating glare in users' eyes. This approach defines each step clearly, preventing trips and falls, especially important for older adults or in low-light conditions.

Approach Detail

Install step lights every 2-3 treads, mounting in the wall 6-8 inches above each tread with light directed downward. Alternatively, use riser-mounted lights aimed forward onto the next tread. Use shielded fixtures that don't create direct glare. Low-output LED is sufficient—just 3-5 lumens per fixture. Consider motion-activation with dusk-to-dawn sensors for automatic operation.
