Tree uplighting

Tree uplighting

Uplighting trees is one of the most dramatic landscape lighting techniques. Ground-mounted fixtures aimed upward into tree canopies create glowing sculptural forms at night, extending the visual garden into evening hours. The technique works with deciduous trees (branch patterns in winter, leaf canopy in summer) and evergreens alike.

Medium Mid-Range
Approach Detail

Position ground-mounted uplights at the base of trees, slightly off-center to create depth. Use narrow beam (20-40 degrees) for tall trees; wider beams for lower, spreading canopies. For large trees, use multiple fixtures from different angles. Bury wiring for clean appearance. Use warm white (2700-3000K) for soft, natural glow. Consider well lights (flush with ground) to minimize visible fixtures.

Key Fixtures

Ground-mounted uplights; landscape well lights (flush mount); adjustable LED tree lights; low-voltage landscape lighting systems
