Front facing key light setup

Front facing key light setup

The key to looking good on video calls is front-facing illumination that minimizes shadows. A ring light or soft LED panel positioned at or slightly above eye level, just behind the camera/monitor, provides even, flattering light. This approach eliminates the raccoon-eye shadows that overhead-only lighting creates.

Easy Budget
Approach Detail

Position a ring light or LED panel directly behind/above your monitor, facing you. Center it at eye level or slightly higher. Use soft, diffused light—not a bare bulb or harsh source. Set color temperature to approximately 5000K for natural skin tones. Adjust brightness so you're well-lit but not washed out. Avoid windows behind you unless you use them as soft backlight accent.

Key Fixtures

Ring lights with stands; LED panel video lights; desk-mounted key lights; soft box lighting for home studios

Designer Notes

View of home office from camera perspective (as if from monitor). Show person with even face lighting, no harsh shadows. Ring light or panel visible behind/above monitor. Clean, professional background visible behind person. Working hours scene. Show natural skin tones—not overlit or washed out. Include monitor edge and desk setup.
