Indirect cove lighting

Indirect cove lighting

Cove or soffit lighting hidden in architectural details creates a soft wash of light on the ceiling and upper walls, providing ambient illumination without any visible fixtures or direct light sources that could create screen reflections. This theatrical approach works beautifully in dedicated media rooms and sophisticated living spaces.

Approach Detail

Install LED strip or linear fixtures in a cove, soffit, or crown molding detail around the room perimeter. Face lights upward toward ceiling for indirect wash. Use warm white (2700-3000K) for cozy atmosphere. Install on dimmer—during viewing, set very low (10-20%). This technique requires architectural build-out but creates stunning results.

Key Fixtures

LED linear fixtures for coves; high-output LED strips (2700-3000K); DMX or 0-10V dimmable drivers; architectural cove or soffit details

Designer Notes

Wide shot of living room with TV wall centered. Camera at seated viewer height. Show cove lighting around ceiling perimeter creating soft glow. TV on wall displaying content. Room dimly lit from cove only—no direct sources visible. Luxurious finishes: dark walls, plush sofa, architectural details. Evening scene, very moody and theatrical.

Best For
Dedicated home theaters and media rooms; high-end living spaces; new construction or major renovations; those wanting invisible light sources.
