Recessed downlight grid

Recessed downlight grid

A properly planned grid of recessed downlights creates uniform ambient light throughout the kitchen. The key is spacing fixtures appropriately (typically 4-6 feet apart depending on ceiling height and beam angle) and positioning them to avoid casting shadows on work surfaces. Use warm-dimming LEDs that shift toward amber as they dim.

Medium Mid-Range
Approach Detail

Layout recessed fixtures in a grid pattern, avoiding placement directly over counter edges where they create shadows on the worker below. Position lights over traffic zones and floor areas. Use 4-inch aperture for refined look or 6-inch for more output. Install on dimmer circuits. Calculate spacing based on beam angle and ceiling height.

Key Fixtures

4-inch or 6-inch recessed LED downlights; warm-dim LED modules (2700K-3000K); IC-rated housings for insulated ceilings; compatible dimmer switches

Designer Notes

Wide shot of kitchen from entry angle showing ceiling with recessed lights in grid pattern. Twilight scene with fixtures at medium intensity. Show how recessed lights don't obstruct sightlines—view through to window or adjacent room. Even light on floor with minimal shadowing. Complementary under-cabinet and pendant lights also visible for layered effect.

Best For
Kitchens with 8-9 foot ceilings; clean ceiling aesthetic requirements; open-concept spaces where kitchen ceiling extends to living areas; those wanting unobtrusive ambient light.
