50 lux viewing chamber

A purpose-designed gallery room for works on paper, textiles, and photographs that require 50 lux or less. The space includes a 2-3 minute adaptation vestibule at 100-150 lux, then entry into the 50-lux gallery. Low-reflectance finishes and careful fixture selection ensure the limited light is used effectively.

Medium Mid-Range
Approach Detail

Design transition vestibule with 100-150 lux ambient, dwell time encouraged through orientation displays or seating. Gallery maintains 50 lux (±5%) using indirect cove lighting for ambient with narrow spotlights on individual works. Use deep black/charcoal wall finishes (reflectance <5%) to maximize perceived contrast. Limit reflective surfaces. Exhibition furniture in matte black. Emergency egress lighting at floor level, shielded from artwork. Interpretive materials lit separately or backlit. Limit visitor numbers for comfort. Consider timed entry tickets.

Key Fixtures

Cove lighting for ambient at 50 lux, precision spotlights with barn doors, floor-level egress lighting, transition zone fixtures at 100-150 lux.

Designer Notes

Render the chamber as intimate, jewel-like. Show visitors in reverent close study of delicate works. Emphasize the dark walls that make the illuminated works glow. Include the transition vestibule showing the adaptation journey. Convey that this is a special, contemplative experience.

Best For
Dedicated works-on-paper galleries, textile collections, photograph exhibitions, rotating display of sensitive collection items.
