Gradient brightness zone

The entrance creates a lighting 'airlock' where brightness gradually increases from exterior conditions to interior retail levels. This gradient prevents the jarring transition that causes temporary visual impairment when entering from bright daylight.

Medium Mid-Range
Approach Detail

Divide entrance into 2-3 zones. Zone 1 (threshold): 70-80% of exterior brightness or higher than interior. Zone 2 (transition): intermediate level. Zone 3 (into retail): full interior retail level. For stores with canopy/vestibule, the gradient is physical. For flush entrances, use dimmed zones in first 2-3 meters. Evening reversal: interior brighter than dark exterior.

Key Fixtures

Dimmable downlights in zones, optional daylight-linked dimming, layered controls by zone

Designer Notes

RENDER SETUP: Store entrance from exterior through to interior. Show brightness gradient across three zones. Include human figure experiencing the transition. Daytime and evening versions.

HOW TO LIGHT IT: Zone 1 (0-1m from door): 800 lux daytime, 400 lux evening. Zone 2 (1-3m): 600 lux daytime, 500 lux evening. Zone 3 (3m+, retail): 500 lux consistent. Daylight sensor option: Zone 1 tracks exterior × 0.7. Use warm (3000K) in all zones for welcoming feel. Fixtures: recessed downlights on zone-specific circuits or DALI addresses.
