About This Style

The industrial culinary space draws inspiration from commercial kitchens and warehouse conversions, celebrating exposed materials and utilitarian fixtures as design features. This approach works beautifully in lofts, converted spaces, and modern homes with high ceilings and open plans.

Oversized pendant lights with metal shades - galvanized steel, matte black, or copper - provide both function and statement. Exposed conduit and vintage-style cage fixtures add authentic industrial character. Track lighting or adjustable spots offer flexibility while reinforcing the working kitchen aesthetic.

Balance the raw materials with warm color temperatures to avoid a cold, clinical feel. Concrete, steel, and exposed brick absorb light, so plan for higher lumen output than a typical kitchen. Edison bulbs and filament-style LEDs add warmth and visual interest in keeping with the industrial vocabulary.

Best For

Loft conversions, urban homes, industrial aesthetic enthusiasts, open-plan living spaces

Key Fixtures

Oversized metal pendants, track or monorail lighting, cage fixtures, exposed bulb sconces, under-cabinet strips

Designer Notes

Dark finishes and exposed materials absorb light - increase fixture count or output accordingly. Use 2700K to warm up industrial materials. Exposed bulbs should be quality LED filament for longevity. Mix matte and brushed metal finishes for depth. Track lighting enables flexibility in open plans. High ceilings may require larger scale fixtures.
