Layered house lighting

A layered approach uses multiple lighting circuits at different angles and intensities that can be blended to achieve any visibility level. Base ambient might come from indirect cove lighting, supplemented by recessed downlights, with accent from aisle lights. Each layer dims independently, allowing infinite combinations from full visibility to atmospheric dimness while maintaining visual comfort.

Medium Mid-Range
Approach Detail

Design minimum three circuits for congregation area: indirect cove/valance lighting (40% of total capacity) for base ambient, recessed downlights (40%) for direct illumination, and aisle/pew-end lights (20%) for wayfinding. Specify dimmers with preset scenes: 'Full House' at 100% all circuits (300 lux for cleaning/setup), 'Engaged Worship' at 50% direct/75% indirect (150 lux), 'Contemplative' at 25% direct/50% indirect (50-75 lux), 'Candlelight Service' at 0% direct/20% indirect (15-25 lux). Use warm CCT (2700-3000K) throughout. Ensure smooth crossfades between scenes (5-10 second transitions).

Key Fixtures

Indirect cove/valance fixtures with warm LED, dimmable recessed downlights, pew-end aisle lights, DMX or DALI scene control.

Designer Notes

Render showing same sanctuary at three different house light levels: full engagement, contemplative, and candlelight. Show how clergy can still see faces at lower levels. Emphasize warmth and intimacy at lower settings. Include view from pulpit showing congregation visibility.

Best For
Traditional sanctuaries with varied service styles, congregations that value atmosphere without sacrificing visibility, buildings with good ceiling architecture for cove lighting.
