Brightness path navigation

Humans naturally move toward light. By creating slightly brighter zones along intended customer paths and at navigation decision points, retailers can influence traffic flow without obvious signage.

Medium Mid-Range
Approach Detail

Map intended customer journey through the store. Increase brightness by 20-30% at key decision points (where paths fork). Keep destination zones (back of store, key departments) slightly brighter than entrance. Create 'breadcrumb' brightness progression. Avoid bright dead-ends that trap customers.

Key Fixtures

Zone-controlled downlights, feature lighting at decision points, scene/area control system

Designer Notes

RENDER SETUP: Plan view of retail floor showing brightness zones overlaid on customer path. Show brighter 'nodes' at decision points and destination zones.

HOW TO LIGHT IT: Base ambient: 350 lux. Decision points (path intersections): 450 lux (+30%). Destination zone (back of store): 500 lux. Progression: subtle increase from front to back. Feature displays at path edges: 1000 lux to draw attention. Avoid brightness at dead-ends or non-merchandise areas.

EFFECTS TO SHOWCASE: Unconscious navigation guidance, customer flow toward desired areas, exploration encouragement, strategic merchandise exposure, psychological retail design.

Best For
