Picture light mounting

Picture light mounting

Picture lights mount on or above artwork to provide dedicated illumination that makes each piece stand out. Traditional brass picture lights evoke gallery and library settings, while contemporary LED versions offer better light quality and energy efficiency. The key is matching the light width to the artwork and aiming to avoid glare on glass or glossy surfaces.

Easy Mid-Range
Approach Detail

Select a picture light 1/2 to 2/3 the width of the framed artwork. For frame-mounted lights, attach directly to the frame top. For wall-mounted versions, position 6-8 inches above the frame and aim downward at 30-degree angle. Use high-CRI LEDs (90+) with 2700-3000K color temperature. For oil paintings without glass, warmer tones enhance traditional works.

Key Fixtures

Battery-powered LED picture lights; hardwired picture lights; frame-mounted picture lights; wireless rechargeable art lights

Designer Notes

Focused shot of a framed painting on a richly colored wall with picture light mounted above. Show the warm wash of light falling on the painting surface. Include hint of room context—perhaps edge of sofa, side table. Evening scene. Traditional painting (landscape or portrait). Brass or bronze picture light fixture. Show how light focuses on art, leaving wall above in shadow.

Best For
Traditional and formal living spaces; important individual pieces; curated art collections; homes wanting gallery-like presentation without recessed lighting infrastructure.
