Daylight responsive lobby dimming

Photosensor-driven control system that continuously monitors exterior illuminance and adjusts lobby lighting to maintain a consistent 10:1 to 20:1 brightness ratio between outside and inside. This ensures the adaptation experience is consistent regardless of whether visitors arrive on a bright summer noon or overcast winter afternoon.

Medium Mid-Range
Approach Detail

Install exterior-facing photosensors in north-facing locations to read ambient daylight. Configure control system to target a 15:1 exterior-to-lobby ratio, adjustable seasonally. Lobby fixtures must dim from 100% (1,000 lux for sunny days) down to 10% (50 lux for nighttime) smoothly. Use high-quality dimming drivers (0.1% minimum) to avoid flicker at low levels. Interior zones maintain fixed ratios to lobby level. Add manual override for special events or exhibitions requiring different sequences.

Key Fixtures

Exterior photosensors, DALI or DMX-controlled fixtures with deep dimming, high-quality LED drivers, building management system integration.

Designer Notes

Show before/after comparison: same lobby on bright day vs. overcast day with adjusted lighting maintaining similar visual experience. Demonstrate how the system creates consistency for the visitor while adapting to conditions. Include diagram of sensor placement and control logic.

Best For
Galleries with significant daylight variation, climate zones with major seasonal light changes, facilities that operate day and evening with different visitor expectations.
