Wall washer entry lighting

Wall washer entry lighting

Wall washing—using linear or recessed fixtures to evenly illuminate a vertical wall surface—creates drama and perceived height in entry spaces. This technique works beautifully with textured walls, accent colors, or displayed art. The even gradient of light from top to bottom adds sophistication and draws eyes upward.

Medium Mid-Range
Approach Detail

Install wall-wash fixtures 2-3 feet from the target wall (closer for more dramatic gradient, farther for more even coverage). Use linear wall washers for continuous illumination or individual recessed wall-wash trims spaced appropriately. Position to highlight textured walls, accent paint, or entry art. Always on dimmer. Often combined with a central entry fixture.

Key Fixtures

Recessed wall wash trims; linear wall wash fixtures; asymmetric distribution fixtures; LED wall grazing fixtures

Designer Notes

Entry or foyer view showing wall bathed in even light from hidden source. Display the dramatic effect on textured or colored wall. Show gradient from bright at top to softer below. Include entry furniture (console, bench) and some art or mirror. Evening scene. Combine with subtle overhead fixture. Emphasize height and drama created by wall wash technique.

Best For
Entries with high ceilings or dramatic architecture; accent walls worth highlighting; contemporary homes; galleries and art-focused entries; entries feeling too dark or low.
